The Analysis and Advocacy Unit at MSF Denmark contributes to meeting the medical and humanitarian needs of MSF’s patients and vulnerable and excluded populations through effective advocacy and impact on Danish and European decision-makers related to global health and humanitarian agendas. Some of the key thematic advocacy priorities of AAU include:
Access to health care: AAU focuses on access issues regarding tuberculosis, pandemic preparedness and response, malnutrition, and antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Activities for each these include securing political engagement on and funding, bring forward MSFs calls to action and key messages to the Danish government and other relevant parliamentary and non-parliamentary stakeholders, and in general, bring awareness to these topics through bilateral engagements and other means of communication.
Emergencies and humanitarian access: AAU brings the concrete advocacy calls related to humanitarian access or specific health situations to Danish decision-makers from our field projects across the world. AAU specifically focuses on participating actively in the MSF Humanitarian Representation Team (HRT) to push agendas forward but also in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), where we will push for Denmark to take an active stance on humanitarian and medical priorities.
European migration and health impacts: AAU raises awareness about the health consequences of European migration policies through testimonies and reports from MSF operations along the borders of Europe and from different European countries. AAU focuses on the impact of EU migration policies on health, where we want Denmark to advocate for a more humane and people-centred approach to EU migration policies and on building and strengthening our alliances through a migration health network.
Planetary health: The planetary health agenda will be prioritized even more due to the devastating consequences of climate change on people’s health and humanitarian situations. This thematic priority comprises external stakeholder engagement and the implementation of Grundfos’ SafeWater partnership agreement, which will give MSF International access to new and more sustainable energy within water pumps.
In summary, AAU plays a critical role in advancing MSF’s advocacy efforts in Denmark with the overall aim of meeting the needs of patients globally and to put important global health and humanitarian agendas on the forefront of political decision-making in Denmark and internationally.
